Biography:Co-founder of SustainAbility in 1987, and Founding Partner & Director of Volans, John Elkington is a world authority on corporate responsibility and sustainable development. In 2004, BusinessWeek described him as “a dean of the corporate responsibility movement for three decades.” SustainAbility advises clients on the risks and opportunities associated with corporate responsibility and sustainable development. Working at the interface between market forces and societal expectations, SustainAbility seeks solutions to social and environmental challenges that deliver long term value.
Mr. Elkington coined the term Triple Bottom Line” (TBL), which captures an expanded spectrum of values and criteria for measuring organizational (and societal) success: economic, ecological and social – a standard adopted by the U.N. In the private sector, a commitment to corporate social responsibility implies a commitment to some form of TBL reporting. Three basic items – people, planet and profit – compose the triple bottom-line. Over time, Mr. Elkington has authored and co-authored 17 books. In 2008, The Evening Standard named John among the ‘1000 Most Influential People’ in London, describing him as a true green business guru, and as an evangelist for corporate social and environmental responsibility long before it was fashionable.
John Elkington is a Visiting Professor at the Doughty Centre for Corporate Responsibility at the Cranfield School of Management. He is a member of the following Boards and Committees: Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI); EcoVadis; The Environment Foundation; Environmental Defense Innovations report; Global Leaders Academy; Global Reporting Initiative (GRI); Gaia Energy Advisory Board; Greenopolis.com; and United Nations Global Compact Cities Programme (UNGCCP).
